Grading Standards
Diamonds are judged and graded according to several international standards.
In the USA we have been familiar with the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) Diamond Grading standard. This standard is internationally recognized but it is not the only standard for Diamonds.
Another internationally recognized Diamond grading standard primarily in Europe and Asia is CIBJO.
CIBJO, the acronym for the French phrase, Confederation International de la Bijouterie, Joaillerie, Orfevrierie des Diamantes, Perles et Pierres, which translates to International Confederation of Jewelry, Silverware, Diamonds and Stones.
Also there is a standard used by Indian diamond brokers and dealers that is a mixture of older terms that were first used when Diamond grading was in its infancy and they are still used today.
